  • Gay London: A Guide by   Will McLoughlin. List Price:£12.00
Gay London aims to be more than just a scene listing. It provides an insight into how a gay man might enjoy the more esoteric pleasures that the city has to offer. These could include the pursuit of spectral figures in Abney Park Cemetery, or perhaps the contemplation of exactly what form the muse took that inspired Frederic Lord Leighton when building his house in Holland Park.

When the reader tires of history, culture and the arts, there is always shopping, the essential facial at Harvey Nicks, followed by lunch and then on to the bars. Rest and relaxation could well be found lounging amidst the art-deco splendour of Porchester Spa or experiencing the rather more gladiatorial pursuits at Chariots Roman Baths.

Samuel Johnson would surely agree that a gay man who tires of London is not tired of life, but only in need of a sun tan.

  • Dyke London by   Rosa Ainley. List Price:£10.00
Clubs may come and go, homosexuality goes in and out of style, but the life of the London dyke continues. Where to go to take care of the daily necessities: buying underwear, kitchen equipment, food and, of course, make-up? This guide gives you the necessary, describing venues to tempt every dyke--softball crews, discussion group-ees, lipstick lesbians and the rest--whether pleasure and/or curiosity propels you to the genteel Vita's on the edge of Bloomsbury or towards the go-go girls at Soho's Candy Bar.

While there is no area of the city that has been refashioned for the pleasure of its resident or visiting lesbians, in the late 90s there is no shortage of dedicated lesbian space, from the everyday/all day to the annual event. In London today there are sexual health clinics, dining-out groups, underwater sports clubs, yoga classes, history walks, sex shops and comedy nights all prefixed with the L-word.

Aside from the specifically lesbian or lesgay, Dyke London suggests venues and pastimes to suit whatever level of (in)visibility you might crave: those where a lesbian presence might be expected, and those where sexuality is neither ticket nor barrier. Places where a dyke in London might like to just be (apols Calvin Klein).
